Brewery reviews- Alaska

BREWERIES IN ALASKA

Alaskan Brewing Company

5429 Shaune Drive, Juneau, AK

http://alaskanbeer.com

Founded: 1986

Last visit: September 2012

Nice: The woody taproom is wonderfully decorated.

Their many displayed awards can be seen with or without a tour (though I recommend with).

Excellent beer, largely due to pure Alaskan glacier water.

Stupid: Juneau itself is difficult to get to and not on the way to anything. However, the brewery is accessible via a short bus ride from downtown, even if you're there on a cruise.

Notes: Nothing to do with the brewery but if you're lucky like I was, you'll meet Ralph "Animal" Austin on the bus. He'll tell you about his younger days as a log-rolling champion with fifty girlfriends. True or not, the story is quite entertaining.

Favorite beer: Amber. Their flagship and my favorite beer ever.

Food: No food served.

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go.

Denali Brewing Company

37083 Talkeetna Spur Road, Talkeetna, AK

http://denalibrewing.com

Founded: 2009

Last visit: September 2012

Nice: Hard to beat the environment that is middle-of-nowhere Alaska.

Very relaxed place with outdoor seating, which Alaska sometimes gets warm enough to use.

Plenty of locals around to find out other things to do in Talkeetna.

Stupid: Talkeetna is definitely worth a visit if you're going north from Anchorage or south from Fairbanks. Otherwise, it's difficult to get to.

Notes: You can't see Denali from the beer garden but a view is not far away

Favorite beer: Chuli Stout

Food: Yes. The brewery is attached to Twister Creek Restaurant.

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go.

Glacier Brewhouse

737 West 5th Avenue, Anchorage, AK

https://www.glacierbrewhouse.com/

Founded: 1996

Last visit: September 2012

Nice: Rustic-looking brewpub with a great downtown location.

Open at least 12 hours every day.

The brick-oven pizzas are awesome.

Notes: After dinner, check out Planet Walk- a giant scale model of our solar system. (The inner planets are within the city while the outer ones (and Pluto!) are well-beyond.)

Favorite beer: Amber Ale (finishes chocolaty)

Food: Full menu of tasty Alaskan fare.

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go.
