Brewery reviews- Florida

BREWERIES IN FLORIDA

Anheuser-Busch Brewery

111 Busch Drive, Jacksonville, FL

http://www.budweisertours.com

Founded: 1876

Last visit: November 2015

Nice: Very large, impressive facility.

Tour features some great beer history and a peek at their famous beechwood-aging.

Honestly, without them, there would probably be no craft beer.

Stupid: If they haven't already (as of 1/23/19), they're going to cease giving tours at this and every A-B location except for the original one in St. Louis.

Notes: This is one of 12 A-B facilities in the US.

Favorite beer: Michelob AmberBock (my guilty pleasure)

Food: No food served

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go.

Bury Me Brewing

4224 Cleveland Avenue, Fort Myers, FL

https://www.burymebrewing.com/

Founded: 2015

Last visit: January 2019

Nice: Tasty, interesting beers with slightly-morbid names

Plenty of seating for groups large and small

Know Nonsense Trivia every Wednesday is a good time

Stupid: It's in Florida and not near me

Notes: They have a hearse with taps on the side available for party rentals

Favorite beer: Creamation (citrusy cream ale)

Food: No food served but The Meat Cottage often pops up outside their door.

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go.

Cigar City Brewing Company

3924 West Spruce Street, Tampa, FL

http://cigarcitybrewing.com

Founded: 2007

Last visit: March 2016

Nice: Their beer is so good, even the flagships are awesome.

Long hours every day.

The excellent tour (which you can book online) will make you wish you worked there.

Stupid: They had a brewpub in the north of the city which was actually pretty poor and has closed. If you never visited it, you didn't miss much.

Notes: Hunahpu's Day, their annual imperial stout release, is a huge event which sells out quickly so grab a ticket if you can. The beer really is that good.

Favorite beer: Big Sound Scotch Ale

Food: No food served

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go.

Crooked Can Brewing Company

426 West Plant Street, Winter Garden, FL

http://www.crookedcan.com

Founded: 2015

Last visit: January 2018

Nice: There's a ton of indoor and outdoor seating.

Open every day.

They obviously spent a lot of time creating their image, labels, etc.

Stupid: The staff I dealt with weren't unfriendly but were certainly rather blah.

Notes: I hope you like hipsters and yuppies.

Favorite beer: McSwagger's Amber

Food: The brewery doesn't serve food but it shares a building with a large market, which has many to-go food booths. (Including macaroni and cheese!!!!)

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go.

Funky Buddha Brewery

1201 Northeast 38th Street, Oakland Park, FL

https://funkybuddhabrewery.com

Founded: 2010

Last visit: February 2018

Nice: The large tasting room is open 11:30am-midnight every day.

Friendly, helpful staff will help you choose from their many beers.

Cool "brewery tour" painting on a wall inside.

Stupid: (see Food below; not stupid as much as confusing)

Notes: It's a little bit north of Fort Lauderdale but definitely worth a visit if you have a layover or are waiting for a cruise.

Favorite beer: Key Lime Tart Ale

Food: There's a food counter which is in the brewery and is part of it but you have to pay separately. Or something. But there's definitely tasty food.

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go.

Islamorada Beer Company

82229 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, FL

http://www.islamoradabeerco.com/

Founded: 2014

Last visit: January 2019

Nice: A bunch of beers available on tap and to-go.

Large, sandy backyard area with seating, games, and other tropical things.

Open every day.

Stupid: The website constantly asks for your age.

Notes: This review is for their "south" location. There's another one in Fort Pierce which I've not yet visited.

Favorite beer: Big Pine (brown ale)

Food: No food served

Rating: 🍺🍺  Definitely go

Miami Brewing Company

30205 Southwest 217th Avenue, Homestead, FL

http://www.miamibrewing.org/

Founded: 2011

Last visit: January 2019

Nice: Very large facility which hosts games, concerts, and private events.

Only a few miles from the Route 9336 entrance to Everglades National Park.

Stupid: I was one of two customers on a slow weekday afternoon and it took a while for me to get a beer.

Notes: Founded as a "side project" by Peter Schnebly, who owns the winery next door.

Favorite beer: Shark Bait Mango Wheat

Food: No food served but there are trucks available at certain times. The winery serves food but I found it bland with very slow service.

Rating: 🍺  Skippable

Swamp Head Brewery

3650 Southwest 42nd Avenue, Gainesville, FL

http://swamphead.com

Founded: 2008

Last visit: November 2015

Nice: Good beers which are subtly different from others of the styles.

Open every day but Monday.

Everything they do is very Florida-centric.

Stupid: If you hate Florida, avoid it. But then why would you be in Florida?

Notes: If you leave your ID there and drive to Jacksonville, they'll be very nice about letting you back in to get it even if it's off-hours.

Favorite beer: Wild Night Honey Cream Ale

Food: No food served but check their website for the food truck schedule

Rating: 🍺🍺 Definitely go.
